PROJECT 1: Evolutionary Computation

Design and implement a software application that involves an evolutionary computation technique, such as genetic algorithms (GA), genetic programming (GP), evolutionary programming , evolution strategies or Particle Swarm Optimization to a real world application.

You will need to identify the application domain and data sources for your project.

You can develop original code from scratch and/or adapt open source code as

you deem necessary. Please refer to the resources in E-class material.

Your project deliverables should adhere to the following timeline:

Deadline: Day of final exam (proposed 16 June 2014)

The samples (0,0), (0,1), (1,0), belong to category A and the samples (2.1,0), (0,-2,5), (1.6,-1,6) belong to category B. Draw the samples in a 2-D diagram. Are the categories linearly separable? Design a perceptron which will separate the categories. Starting with initial weights 0.3 and learning rate 0.1 calculate the output and the weights for 2 epochs.

In a multilayer perceptron we have 2 inputs, 2 neuron in a hidden layer and one neuron in the output layer. Given inputs 0.2 and 0.5 with desired output 1. Initial weights are 0.2 from the input layer to the hidden layer and 0.3 from the hidden layer to the output. Furthermore, all bias values are 0.4 and the learning rate 0.15. Find the new weight values after one backpropagation step. The activation function is sigmoid.

Show that a neural network with many layers that have a linear activation function is equivalent to a neural network with a single layer.

Describe the difference between batch and sequential updates.

Explain the problem of overfitting and how validation is used to solve it.

For the input patterns [-0.3 0.5 1 -1] and [-0.3 0.4 0.6 -0.6] perform z-axis normalization and calculate the new patterns.

In a Kohonen neural net with 1000 constant training cycles and initial learning rate 0.10, in how many cycled the learning rate will become 0.05?

In a Kohonen neural net with three units in the input we present the following 4 patterns in the exact order shown [0.8 0.7 0.4], [0.6 0.9 0.9], [0.3 0.4 0.1] and [0.1 0.1 0.3]. These patterns correspond to the 2 output units with the weights [0.5 0.6 0.8] and [0.4 0.2 0.5]. Letting the radius of neighborhood to be 0 and the learning rate 0.5. Calculate the changes in the weights the first cycle.

Calculate two generations for the simple problem max {x²} over x {0,.. 63}

a) Starting with random numbers {0.3, 0.6, 0.1, 0.7} calculate the binary representation of the code to be used with initial population of 4.

b) For each member of the initial population calculate x, f(x), f_norm, cumulative f_norm,

c) Using roulette wheel selection with random numbers {0.3, 0.8, 0,2, 0.5} form the population after reproduction with 4 spins.

d) Perform a two point crossover between individuals 1,2 {crossover 3,5 bits} and individuals 3,4 {crossover 5,2 bits}

e) Perform bitwise mutation on 3^rd bit from left of 2^nd individual and 5^th bit from left on 4^th individual.

f) Repeat step b,

g) Repeat step c with random numbers {0.1, 0.3, 0,9, 0.7}

h) Perform a one point crossover between individuals 1,3 {crossover 3^rd bit} and individuals 2,4 {crossover 4^th bit}

i) Repeat step b

j) Using modified roulette wheel selection (Baker) with random numbers {0.1, 0.9, 0,4, 0.6} form the third generation population after reproduction with 1 spin.

After running a genetic algorithm for a fairly long time, the fitness values tend to cluster at the high end of the scale. For example, on a scale of 0 to 1, they might cluster from 0.90 to 0.98. What is the main problem with this? How can it be alleviated?
