5G (from "5th Generation") is the term to describe the next generation of cellular networks beyond 4G LTE mobile networks. 5G will be commercially available after 2020. Mobile operators and vendors participate in 3GPP specification process. 5G performance targets high data rate, reduced latency, energy saving, cost reduction, higher system capacity, and massive device connectivity. 5G is coming to address applications like Augmented Reality (AR)/Virtual Reality (VR) media and applications, UltraHD or 360-degree streaming video and many more where the data rate of LTE or even the LTE-A are not enough.  In addition, there are latency-sensitive applications that require less delay than the LTE and other applications that require extremely low probability of error. Also, 4G cannot cope with the exponential growth of connected devices due to IoT, such as the development of billions of wireless connected sensors, actuators and similar devices for mass machine connectivity. So in this introductory lesson we will try to illuminate this wonderful and very promising new 5G technology that will change the world and the economy of the planet.
