Α) Introduction: Geological and basic maps; strike and dip of the beds; true and apparent inclination; vertical and real thickness; three points problem and construction of direction lines. - Elements for the construction of a geological map;The geological compass; Representation techniques of structural elements on a geological map and a geological section: normal and reverse faults, thrust faults, the effects of faulting in outcrop, calculation of displacement, strike-slip faults; relative age of the faults, anticlines and synclines; plunging folds; the effects of faulting on fold structures.Descrition and characterization of mappable lithostratigraphic units, measurement and construction of stratigraphic sections, acquisition of geologic field data. Recognition, characterization and mapping of complex geological and structural situations; Field exercises. STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY: Basic concepts of deformation; Faults and Fractures; Folds; Foliation, Lineatin and Fabric; Stress and Strain; Stress and Strain in rocks; determination of strain in rocks; Faulting and Stress; Strain in folds and shear zones;
Β) Introduction: sources of energy, environmental aspects of the energy problem, conventional and unconventional sources. Geothermal energy: hystorical. The Earth System: Geology and geothermal energy, Earth's internal structure, production of endogenous heat, temperature, enthalpy. Geothermal systems: general characteristics, classification: hydrothermal geothermal systems, geo-pressurized magma and hot dry rocks. The geothermal exploration: general. The methods of investigation: Geochemistry applied to geothermal energy (temperature and composition of the geothermal fluid from the hot springs and gas to the surface); Geophysical methods applied to geothermal energy (gravimetry, geo-electric, magnetotelluric, seismic); structural geology applied to geothermal energy (geological model , analysis and assessment of permeability); Hydrogeology applied to geothermal energy (evaluation of the deep circulation, recharge and potential of the reservoir). The geothermal wells. Generation of Electricity: principles of operation of geothermal power plants, classification of plants. World geothermal fileds. Basin analysis: Porosity and permeability in reservoir rocks. Classification and formation of oil and gas traps. Basin types and their hydrocarbon potential. Regional petroleum geology of some selected petroleum provinces. The main trends in the production of oil, natural gas and coal.
Hydrocarbon exploration: Initial stage of hydrocarbon-bearing rocks (geological maps, satellite imaginary, aerial photography) gravity, magnetics, heat flow, seismic methods, 3-D seismic surveys. Land and marine data acquisition. Data processing and interpretation. Drilling techniques. Monitoring and Evaluation, borehole studies. Legislation about hydrocarbon E&P. Environmental management in oil and gas exploration and production.
